FAQs

Questions You Might Have About Our Services

How much does counseling at the center cost, and how many sessions are available?

  • Individual or Couple’s Counseling:  The exact number of sessions are decided by the counselor and therapist in the spirit of UCS’s time-limited counseling framework. The average number of sessions at UCS (as well as other college counseling centers) is 6. The maximum number of individual sessions (per degree program) is 20. Recognizing that some students may want or need longer term support, our counselors will work with you to provide a referral if that would be helpful or necessary. Students must be enrolled at least half-time to be eligible for services (for undergraduate students, that’s 2 classes, for grad students, that’s 1 class). Students interested in individual or couple’s counseling are charged $5 per session and $10 per session for the consulting psychiatrist.
  • Group Counseling:  At UCS, there are no session limits with group counseling.

What if I Need Counseling, but Can't Afford It?

Don't let the cost of counseling discourage you from seeking services you might need.  The counseling we provide to DePaul students  is affordable and there are professionals in the area who will provide services to students at a sliding scale.  If you have concerns about cost, you can discuss them with your counselor or give us a call at 773-325-7779 or 312-362-6923

Do you prescribe medication?

UCS employs a consulting psychiatrist who conducts psychiatric evaluations, medication consultations and medication management for students who students who are engaged in concurrent counseling at UCS.  If you are looking for long-term management of your medications or need a referral for medication-only, a UCS counselor can help you find a referral in the community.  Please note that the consulting psychiatrist is not available during the summer sessions.

Do you provide services to Grad students, Law students and students in the School of New Learning?

We provide individual, group and couples counseling to all DePaul students enrolled at least half-time.  Undergraduates, graduate students, law students, and students from the School for New Learning are welcome.  Although we do not see DePaul alumni, we can offer referrals.  If you need a referral, feel free to give us a call  between the hours of 9am and 5pm.

I'm interested in Couple's Counseling, but my significant other is not a DePaul student.  Can I still utilize your services?

Yes.  We will provide Couples Counseling as long as one of you is a DePaul student.  It does not matter if the student is you or your significant other.  If you are interested in Couple's Counseling, call us  to set up an initial appointment.

Do you see DePaul alumni?

We do not see DePaul alumni, but can refer them to services in the area.  If you are an alumnae/alumnus who would like a referral, please give us a call.

What is a Same Day Consultation appointment?

In order to better Support DePaul’s Community, we now offer a Same Day Consultation appointment (SDC). Students wanting to learn more about counseling are invited to call our main number to schedule this brief telephone assessment. Our front desk will assist you in scheduling an appointment that same day with a counselor who will help you determine the next best step. The Same Day Consultation appointments will typically be conducted by telephone and will last about 10 or 15 minutes at most. There is no fee for the Same Day Consultation appointment.

Of course, if you feel you are in crisis and that your emergency cannot wait for a consultation later that day, we will connect you with the counselor on call during that time.

Do you provide Phone Counseling?

At this time, we do not provide counseling over the phone.  We do provide in-person counseling to DePaul students.

I'm Not a DePaul student, but Need Counseling.  Can You Direct Me to some Services?

Yes.  If you need counseling, you may call us for a referral, or refer to some of the helpful resources listed on this site.

If I Seek Counseling, Does that Mean I'm "Crazy"?

No.  Just because you are seeking services, that does not mean you're "crazy."  Many people seek counseling for personal growth and/or because they need help managing the challenges life presents all of us with at one time or another.  Seeking outside help from a trained, licensed professional is a way to work through a difficult time.  We make counseling available to DePaul students because we know that everyone goes through some difficult time in college.
