FAQs
Questions You Might Have About Our Services
How much does counseling at the center cost, and how many sessions are available?
-Individual or Couples Counseling: There are 20 sessions available to all DePaul students enrolled at least half-time, who are interested in Individual or Couples counseling (for undergraduate students, that’s 2 classes, for grad students, that’s 1 class). Students interested in Individual or Couples counseling are charged $5 per session. The counseling center does not take medical insurance.
-Group Counseling: Group counseling sessions are unlimited.
What
if I Need Counseling, but Can't Afford It?
Don't let the cost of counseling discourage you from seeking
services you might need. The counseling we provide to DePaul
students is affordable and there are professionals in the area who
will provide services to students at a sliding scale. If you have
concerns about cost, you can discuss them with your counselor or give us
a call at 773-325-7779 or 312-362-6923
Do
you prescribe medication?
Psychologists do not prescribe medication, but psychiatrists
do. We do not have any psychiatrists on staff at UCS. We do,
however, have psychologists on staff who can refer you to
psychiatrists in the area, as well as assist you with managing your
medication. It is possible to see a psychologist at our center
while seeing a psychiatrist at another facility. If you are
interested in this type of arrangement, call us to set up an
appointment. You are welcome to utilize our services for
counseling while seeing a psychiatrist elsewhere.
Do
you provide services to Grad students, Law students and students in the
School of New Learning?
We provide individual, group and couples counseling to all DePaul
students enrolled at least half-time. Undergraduates, graduate
students, law students, and students from the School for New Learning
are welcome. Although we do not see DePaul alumni, we can offer
referrals. If you need a referral, feel free to give us a
call between the hours of 9am and 5pm.
I'm interested
in Couple's Counseling, but my significant other is not a DePaul
student. Can I still utilize your services?
Yes. We will provide Couples Counseling as long as one of you is a
DePaul student. It does not matter if the student is you or your
significant other. If you are interested in Couple's Counseling,
call us to set up an initial appointment.
Do you see
DePaul alumni?
We do not see DePaul alumni, but can refer them to services in the
area. If you are an alumnae/alumnus who would like a referral,
please give us a call.
What are
Walk-Ins?
Typically, students utilize our walk-in service for urgent needs.
Others utilize them when they are:
-dealing with an issue and unsure about
what to do next.
-having a "bad day" and need
to voice concerns
-not interested in long-term counseling
at the time, but in touching base with someone other than a family
member or friend.
After a walk-in, students may or may
not decide to follow up with long-term counseling.
Do you provide
Phone Counseling?
At this time, we do not provide counseling over the phone.
We do provide in-person counseling to DePaul students.
Is your
Relationships Group just for people in Romantic Relationships?
No. You do not have to be involved in a romantic relationship to
take part in the Relationships Group. You may want to improve your
relationships with friends, family members, parents or others. The
group is open to all people, regardless of race, religious affiliation,
or sexual orientation.
I'm Not a DePaul student, but Need
Counseling. Can You Direct Me to some Services?
Yes. If you need counseling, you may call us for a referral, or
refer to some of the helpful
resources listed on this site.
If I Seek
Counseling, Does that Mean I'm "Crazy"?
No. Just because you are seeking services, that does not
mean you're "crazy." Many people seek counseling for
personal growth and/or because they need help managing the challenges
life presents all of us with at one time or another. Seeking
outside help from a trained, licensed professional is a way to work
through a difficult time. We make counseling available to DePaul
students because we know that everyone goes through some difficult time
in college.
