DePaul Fraternity & Sorority Fun Facts

Data to Consider
57% of Fraternity and Sorority student members are female, 43% male. These percentages are very similar to the university's percentages of 55% female, 45% male.

49% of all Fraternity and Sorority student members are commuters, while 50% live on campus. This is more evenly divided than DePaul's undergraduate population, which is 70% commuters.

The ethnic breakdown of all Fraternity and Sorority members is comparable to the larger DePaul student statistics (see table below). Fraternity and Sorority organizations are able to serve and program specifically for our diverse DePaul community. Having such a wide representation of cultural backgrounds has the potential of becoming a large selling point for the university's new student recruitment efforts.

Ethnicity Fraternities and Sororities DePaul Student Population
Caucasian 59% 61%
Latino 21% 13%
Asian 10% 12%
African American 6% 7%
Unknown 4% 5%

The Fraternity and Sorority breakdown by class is 31% senior, 22% junior, 27% sophomore, and 18% freshman. The number of seniors in Fraternity and Sorority organizations is higher than the DePaul student statistics, which reports only 19% seniors. The retention of organization members from their freshman year through their senior year is worth noting. Fraternity and Sorority organizations do not seem to follow the common trend of losing member involvement as they get farther along in their academic career.
*Data based on the 2002-2003 academic year.

Fraternities and sororities oftentimes use Greek-letters for their names. This stems from the studies of the classics in the late 1700s and the introduction of fraternities and sororities to college campuses!
