SLI History
As a response to student requests for a formal training program, Dr. Lane in the
University Values and Mission office created the Student Leadership Institute (SLI).
Throughout its development, over 100 faculty and staff members contributed their
ideas. Moreover, several Vincentian priests conducted presentations on the
leadership of St. Vincent de Paul. Inspired by the Vincentian approach for
Servant Leadership, SLI is committed to enhancing prevailing theories
surrounding business-oriented definitions of leadership. At conception, SLI's primary initiative was
to implement a workshop series for students which (upon completion) would earn them a certificate in leadership development. The certificate of completion would be noted on the student's official university transcript.
In 2001, SLI became a fully integrated part of Student Affairs at DePaul and has since then extended its services to include customized workshops for other divisions and student organizations at DePaul, a "LEAD-In!" or an emerging leaders program for new students who seek to get involved on campus, and a mentoring component. The Institute, which is growing at a very rapid pace, encourages more student involvement on campus. Currently, the Student Leadership Institute will provide continuing opportunities for all interested students to:
- study and apply value-based leadership concepts in a variety of organizational and community settings with an emphasis on Vincentian leadership through socially responsible service;
- assess and develop their personal leadership potential through testing, experiential learning, and reflection;
- enable students to understand the ethical and moral responsibilities of leaders, develop relational skills associated with effective leadership (i.e. communication, critical thinking, listening, public speaking, organizational development, collaboration, motivation) and management skills such as time management, budgeting and action research;
- learn, through hands-on experience, how to lead in diverse and multicultural settings.
