What is a Social Security Number?

Social Security Numbers (SSNs) are issued by the Social Security Administration (SSA) which is part of the U.S. federal government.  SSNs are used for identification purposes or record-keeping purposes. For example, a SSN is used for paying taxes, obtaining a driver's license and/or a state identification and is also used by employers to report income.

In order to work in the U.S., you must first apply for a SSN.. Please note that the 9 digit number you may have been assigned by
DePaul University at the time of admission (usually beginning with "999" - example: 999-98-3201) is not a social security number.

New Policy Limits the Issuance of Social Security Numbers

Due to concerns about national security and a growing problem with identity theft, the SSA has put into place stringent policies limiting the issuance of SSNs.

As of October 13, 2004, F-1 and J-1 student are eligible to apply for a SSN ONLY IF one of the following is true:

(1)  Student has an on-campus job.  See sample letter.

(2)  Student has an Employment Authorization Document (EAD)

(3)  Student has been authorized for Curricular Practical Training (F-1)

(4)  Student has been authorized for Academic Training (J-1)

Please note that the change in policy affects all F-1 students at all universities and in all states.

Processing Information

There is no application fee but due to new immigration document verification procedures instituted by SSA, processing times may take as long as 12 weeks.

SSA must first verify the immigration status of each F-1 or J-1 student before issuing a SSN.  SSA verifies your immigration status by accessing your SEVIS record through SAVE (Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements).

It usually takes up to 10 calendar days after your entry into the U.S. before your record shows up in SAVE. If your information is not found in SAVE, the SSA will wait for another 10 days before attempting to verify your record.  If your information is still not showing up in SAVE, the SSA must request special verification of your status from the Department of Homeland Security Immigration Status Verification unit which may take additional time.
