University Emergency Protocol
University personnel are
equipped to handle emergency
situations in case of a campus
crisis. Public Safety, as well
as other University departments,
will follow routine procedures
in order to notify the
appropriate entities and to
mobilize the appropriate
resources.

The following is a snapshot of
the actions taken by the
University in an emergency
situation:
[Emergency Event Occurs]
-
Public Safety learns about the event via witnesses,
University alarms, Chicago
Police, etc.
-
Public Safety Dispatcher relays information to all PS
officers via radio
-
Public Safety officers take necessary actions (lock-down,
evacuations, etc.)
-
Chicago Police Department contacted (two districts are
close by) and involved
within minutes
-
Facilities Operations employees contacted via radio and
instructed to switch to
Public Safety radio channels
for further instructions
-
Public Safety Dispatcher contacts University Relations in
preparation for a University
Statement to be sent out to
DePaul via e-mail and web as
well as to external entities
-
Other University departments (Student
Affairs,
Dean of Students, etc.)
are contacted and those
departments role out their
plans of action
New University Communications
Systems
In spring of 2008, the University will employ two new
systems that will allow
important communications to be
sent out to all students,
faculty and staff in case of
emergency.
The first of the two systems will be able to call all
registered phones (cellular,
home) for faculty, staff and
students with a short,
pre-recorded message about the
emergency. The DePaul Community
will be prompted to update their
registered contact information
at least 2-3 times each year in
order for the system to be as
effective as possible.
The second system involves the use of a public announcement
(PA) system as well as scrolling
message boards. The campus-wide
PA system will be located
inside buildings throughout
campus. The scrolling message
boards will be located in
classrooms across campus.
Announcements and Instructions
will be shared via the PA system
and the message boards
Though we hope to never have a need to use these systems,
they will no doubt assist the
University in communicating
quickly with its constituents in
times of emergency.

Emergency Information
In the event of an emergency it
is critical to consider the
following information.
Be Aware
One of the most important things
you can do is to simply be aware
of your environment and
surroundings. Report any
suspicious persons, objects or
behavior to Public Safety
immediately.
Know DePaul's Plans
Make certain that you are
familiar with any campus and/or
building emergency procedure.
DePaul University does have a
current evacuation plan for the
residence halls/apartment
communities and all academic and
administrative buildings in
preparation for the various
types of emergencies that can
occur on campus. All evacuation
procedures are located near the
entrances of university
buildings. In the residence
halls/apartment communities an
evacuation route is affixed to
the back of unit doors.
Have a Communication Plan
Take some time to develop a plan
for contacting friends and
family should some kind of
emergency occur. Let people know
where you are going and when you
will be back.
Be Well Informed and Connected
As the world changes around us
each day, it is critical that
you stay aware of the unfolding
situation. By being well
informed you will be in the best
position to help DePaul act and
react. Make sure all of your
emergency contact information is
correct and up-to-date on Campus
Connect including email
addresses and current phone
numbers.
