The Mile Walkers is a group
of students who are hired to perform theatrical
activism through original scripts to engage the
first year students under the direction of Ms.
Cordelia Holbert, coordinator of Diversity
Education. The scripts are
written to challenge existing belief systems
around issues of social justice and human
rights.
The Mile Walkers are a
central component of DePaul's new student
orientation process. Students tackle
issues such as cultural and ethnic diversity,
sexuality, abuse, and eating disorders, and many
other forms of oppression. All of these
are issues that challenge students and often
overwhelm first-year students.
The Mile Walkers bring the
issues of stereotyping and oppression to life in
original scripts, then engage their audiences in
a discussion to understand how these issues may
be framed within the Mission of DePaul and
inform first year students of valuable resources
that can continue to provide support.
